The account after the death of the beneficiary is transferred to the heirs. When there is more than one heir, each of them takes over the share of the bank account in accordance with their share of the inheritance. Below are the documents that must be forwarded in case of death.
A. INTESTATE INHERITANCE
- Death certificate of the deposit beneficiary.
- Certificate of nearest relatives issued by the Municipality in which the deceased had their family unit.
- Certificate of Secretary of the Court of the Peace in whose district the deceased had their last residence, on non-publication of will, recent.
- Certificate of Secretary of the Athens Court of First Instance on non-publication of will, recent.
- Certificate of the Secretary of the Court of the Peace in whose region the deceased had their last residence, on non-waiver of succession rights.
B. TESTAMENTARY INHERITANCE
- Death certificate of the deposit beneficiary.
- Certificate of nearest relatives issued by the Municipality in which the deceased had their family unit.
- Certified copy of the will that has been published and report of its publication by the competent Court of the Peace or First Instance, if the will has been published in the Court of First Instance.
When the will is holographic, it must have been declared as the main will, whereas when the holographic will designates exclusively an heir who is not the spouse of the testator or who does not have a relationship with the testator of at least the fourth degree, the court decision declaring it as the main will must cite hand writing expertise in order to prove the authenticity of writing and signature of the testator, in accordance with the process of Article 808 of the Code of Civil Procedure.
- A certificate from the Secretary of the Court of the Peace in which the will was published, that the deceased had not published another will.
- Certificate of Secretary of the Court of Peace in whose district the deceased had their last residence, if that is different from the previous one, on the non-publication of another will by the deceased, recent.
- A certificate from the Secretary of the Court of First Instance of Athens, of non-publication of another will by the deceased, recent.
- Certificate of the Secretary of the Court of the Peace in whose region the deceased had their last residence, on non-waiver of succession rights.
Note 1: Where recent supporting documents are required, these must not come more than 30 days after the date of submission of the application for investigation and information, and must come at least 30 days after the death.
Note 2: In cases where a certificate of inheritance has been issued, information may be provided without presentation of the above legalising documents, by virtue of a certified copy of the certificate of inheritance and a certificate stating that the certificate has not been revoked.
C. VACANT SUCCESSION
- Death certificate of the deposit beneficiary.
- Decision to appoint a guardian of the vacancy and acceptance thereof
