Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a European requirement – regulation that safeguards the security of online transactions. The requirement checks that all electronic payments are executed with multi-factor authentication, to maximize the security of electronic payments. To achieve strong identification, it may request:
- information that only the user has access to (for example, mobile phone number, hardware token or OTP/One Time Password)
- information set by the user himself (e.g. PIN, secret phrase, password)
- user biometric characteristics (e.g. fingerprints, facial recognition)
